The Coinage of the Empire of Trebizond by Bendall, S.
The Coinage of the Empire of the Trebizond by Bendall, S.
Paperback, 72 pages, illustrated throughout in black and white. This is the first significant work on the Empire of Trebizond published for over a century.
Over a century since Wroth and Retowski published the two standard catalogues of the coinage of the Empire of Trebizond, Simon Bendall's introduction to the coinage was first published in 2015. Comparatively little of the history of the empire is known compared to that of the Byzantine Empire, and very little has been written about it. This introduction gives a brief history of the Empire and its coinage, along with information about metrology., mints, silver sources, legends, symbols, sigla, sceptres and more. Different types are comprehensively illustrated with photographs.
The book has been reprinted due to popular demand, and is the perfect introduction to this most fascinating of coinages.
About the author:
Simon Bendall has always had a keen interest in history and archaeology, and began collecting Roman coins while still at school. He worked in the world of numismatics as a dealer, an advisor and a consultant to auction houses from 1964 until his retirement in 2001, cataloguing the first sale of Bunker Hunt’s Byzantine gold coins for Sotheby’s, for example. Since retirement he has continued to publish numismatic articles and give papers, the latest at the International Byzantine Congress in Belgrade in 2016.
